Festive Fifty Longlist

I’m a regular contributor to a weekly (or so) podcast, Contrast Podcast.  If you’ve never listened; well, what’s keeping you?

The podcast is based on a theme, chosen by our host, Tim Young.  We all choose songs based on that theme, record an intro, and send it to Tim, who does the compiling. Tim  encourages us to submit ideas for the themes, and the latest show is one that I had a hand in, the theme being “my first download.” (Funny thing, lots of people do not seem to recall which song was their first download.  I find that surprising, since the participants are all music lovers.)

Annually, Tim presents “The Festive Fifty” countdown of our favorite tunes of the year.  It’s quite an undertaking, but Tim seems to have some magical formula to calculate the order of the presentation, and after a few years, he’s probably worked out any annoying kinks.

Soooooo…..

It’s almost Festive Fifty time, and we’re supposed to submit our number one song of the year, followed by up to 49 other songs we care to throw into the hat.  Somehow, with some abracadabra happening, the list gets narrowed down, and we choose our top 10.  Tim assigns intros to participants, pieces it together, and shares it for all in three episodes.  It’s always a delightful listen, and I have heard some great songs that I had passed over previously.

Anyone can submit a list, so if you are interested, write down your number one song of the year, and your other picks (up to 49 songs, but it can be shorter) and send it to me (natsthename at gmail, I will forward it to the guy compiling the list. It needs to get to me by Saturday, Nov. 13)   You don’t even have to be a regular listener.  The countdown starts in December,

Great, more music for me to check out, like I don’t do that enough already 🙂

Nice to see, we’ll have some over lap as usual.

I’m probably going to do either a Top 50 or 100 list as I’ve done for the last couple of years. But I’m going to do release it closer to the end of the year. Novembers just a little to soon to be thinking about this stuff yet!!

That’s a great list! I have a bunch of those songs on my list, too. Now, to try and put them in some sort of order!

I sent my list to James yesterday, Nat: can you believe that I didn’t find more than eight (yes, eight!) songs?! Get yourself a child and watch your free time fading away to zero!!

Dirk, i do have a child(2) but the youngest is 13, and not as time consuming. When they were small, I had little time for anything but the radio, so I know what you mean.

I found you through a link from Boris Skalsky. I am going to have some fun with this site.

“Nothing Will Break Me Now” is a my fave from Dead Heart Bloom.

You list is going to send me down the rabbit hole.

    Thanks.

thanks, Debra. Have fun in the rabbit hole! I love”Nothing Will Break Me NOw” as well, but the entire album is great. I was tempted to submit the entire thing for the countdown, but I’m hoping a couple of songs end up in the final list.

Oh, lists drive me nuts! I’d just put a few entire albums — the Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, that divine Ben and Nick opus, the Old 97’s Grand Theatre Volume One, and Imaginary Television by Graham Parker. Okay, “Riding In My Car,” cos I’ve got such a girl crush on Zooey, and throw in John Mellencamp’s “Love At First Sight” and the Black Key’s “Tighten Up.”

    But really, I HATE lists(and I’m such a sucker for them…
