Wayback Wednesday

For the summer, I’m heading back 50 years, into my free and easy childhood summer of 1966.  Let’s push the button on our car radios to our favorite station (Cincinnati’s WSAI for me, after begging my dad to switch to it) and enjoy. They don’t write ’em like that anymore.

Of course, the light, poppy nature of the production here is a counter to the true, sad story behind the song, but do we need to go there? Why not?  Seems that John found out that his wife Michelle was canoodling with Denny behind his back. This upset Cass, too, as she had a huge crush on Denny and had been secretly in love with him. The band tossed Michelle out (how could they toss out Denny, since he was a major talent with the singing/songwriting) for a few months, but she returned.  Who says Fleetwood Mac’s band drama was unique?

This is one of my favorite Mamas and Papas songs, and I love that Denny and Michelle had to relive the drama every time they performed it.

Oh, John Phillips, you delightfully evil man.
